2012 Draft Options for the Minnesota Vikings

Almost a full season after surprising the NFL by taking Christian Ponder 12th overall in the 2011 draft, the Vikings are looking to land another impact player in next April's draft.  While Ponder has looked promising, the Vikings are 2-10 on the year, and will likely be looking at a top-3 pick.  With a number of talented players on the roster - Adrian Peterson, Ponder, Percy Harvin, and Jared Allen just to name a few - if Minnesota can fill a few (albeit significant) holes, they may be able to return to significance sooner than later.  Here's a look at a few guys who will be on their draft list this offseason.

2012 Draft Options for the Carolina Panthers

After hitting a homerun with last years 1st overall pick, Cam Newton, the Panthers are on the right track in rebuilding their team.  Still, at 4-8 on the season, it's clear they still have a way to go.  Fortunately for them, Carolina will likely be looking at another top-10 pick.  In a draft filled with talent on both sides of the ball the Panthers should have no problem finding an impact player to help return the franchise to playoff contention.  Here's a look at a few of their top options:

New NBA CBA - What's Changed?

Don't feel like reading the CBA? Well, we didn't either, but we did it so we could all understand it.  Here is a look at some of the key points we've found thus far.  More to come on this, along with analysis of how this will affect specific teams and players.

Sportsbank's College Basketball Top 10

Only two weeks into the college basketball season, and we have already seen a handful of memorable games.  Michigan State has played through their usual stretch of impossible non-conference games... Coach K won his record 903rd game en route to winning the 28th Maui Invitational... and multiple preseason top-10s - UConn, Memphis and UNC - have been upset.  Despite the fact that the 2011-2012 season is still in its infancy, some teams have already established themselves as the ones to watch come March.  Here's Sportsbank's 1st top-10 rankings for the 2011-12 season.

1. Kentucky Wildcats

Most people have had North Carolina atop their lists from day one, but after a surprising loss to UNLV, I had to give the nod to the 6-0 Wildcats.  Led by freshman PG Marquis Teague (11.7 PPG, 4 APG) and sophomore SG Doron Lamb (14.2 PPG), John Calipari has plenty of weapons at his disposal.  With three key freshmen, two sophomores and only one senior seeing significant playing time, the team is young.  If they can gel quickly and live up to the hype, Kentucky is poised to make another run to the Final Four this year... but their inexperience and lack of a true center may come back to haunt them.

2. Ohio State Buckeyes

Ohio State is off to a strong start.  The Buckeyes, led by Sophomore Jared Sullinger (who is averaging an impressive 18.8 PPG and 10.7 RPG) are 6-0, and already have an impressive win over a good Florida team.  Their next game, tomorrow night against Duke, will be a real measuring stick.  If they can pull off the 'W' against a second top-10 team, they'll keep the pressure on Kentucky for the #1 spot in the country.  To do that, however, they'll need more than just Sullinger.  Fortunately, it looks like Senior William Buford (17.7 PPG) and Sophomore PG Aaron Craft (5.5 APG) are up to the task.

Week 12 Start em/Sit em

Start em

Brent Celek

Brent Celek is really emerging as a viable option for the Eagles. I’ve been talking up this guy for a few weeks now, and the trend seems to be continuing, as he’s become a major target for whomever the Eagles put in at QB.  Don’t be fooled by the way the Patriots secondary took apart the Chiefs… It’s not very good. Celek will continue to get his looks and I expect him to get into the endzone this week for the first time since Week 8.

Week 12 Fantasy Waiver Wire Pickups

Another week down, another week closer to the fantasy postseason.  If you've been paying attention to the waiver wire (and had a little luck) you're probably in position to make a deep run in the playoffs.  If not... you may still have time!  With injuries piling up as the season wears on, new players will step in and show what they've got.  Here are a few players worth a look in the final weeks of the regular season.

1. Toby Gerhart, RB, Minnesota Vikings

While he's no Adrian Peterson, it looks like Gerhart will be taking the carries for Purple Jesus in Week 12.  Peterson left the game against Oakland with a grade 1 high ankle sprain, an injury that's especially tough for a running back, and is doubtful for next weekends game against the Falcons.  Gerhart doesn't have Peterson's explosiveness, but he will be stepping into a run heavy offense where he will get most of the touches (including 3rd down's).  While his matchup in Atlanta isn't incredibly favorable, Gerhart does have value, especially as the 2-8 Vikings will be in no hurry to rush Peterson back onto the field.

2. Kevin Smith, RB, Detroit Lions

Lions running back Kevin Smith seemingly came out of nowhere to dominate the fantasy world in Week 11, rushing for 140 yards and 2 scores. While he has a tougher matchup this week against the 10-0 Packers, Smith still may be a decent 2RB or flex play as long as Jahvid best stays sidelined. Even if Best does return, it appears Smith has at least earned himself a timeshare in Detroit. Looking down the road, Smith has a very up and down schedule matchup-wise as he will face the Packers (twice), Vikings, Saints, Chargers and Raiders.  Bottom line, he's worth an add in most leagues... Just don't expect those monster numbers every week.  He's only owned in .8% of ESPN leagues, so he should be available.

Sportsbank's Way-2-Early NFL Mock Draft Picks 1-10

So were not quite to the midway point of the 2011 NFL season... who says its too early to take a look at the upcoming draft?  We all know that Andrew Luck is destined to become next years number one pick, and likely a future franchise quarterback... but only one team will land the Stanford standout.  So what about the other 31 teams?   Surely there are a lot of other talented players to be had come next April, but who are they and where will they end up?  Here's my "way to early" 2012 NFL Mock Draft.

First of all, here are a few things to take note of.  Since we're only midway through the season, I've decided to make the draft order based on the current NFL standings after week 10.  For tiebreakers, I made my best assumption on where each team will end up based on their remaining schedule.  As always, the outcome will likely change dramatically between now and draft day.  Regardless, here is a good starting point to see who your team may take in this Aprils draft.

1. Indianapolis Colts - Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford

Regardless if Peyton Manning is healthy enough to play next year, Luck is the guy.  Arguably the best collegiate prospect since John Elway, at the most important position on the football field.  This would also be a great fit for Luck.  If the Colts let luck learn from Manning for a year, then trade Peyton for some weapons, they could regain their status as one of the NFL's elite for years to come.

How the Lockout Benefits the T-Wolves

The NBA lockout has brought about a dark time. With the cancellation of the season appearing to be inevitable, us fans should try to look on the bright side. Here are some ways the 2011/2012 NBA season cancellation could benefit 4 different Timberwolves.
#1: Development of Ricky Rubio. Ricky has shown brilliance in his passing ability, and few question how it will translate. The big concern is his ability to hit the open jumper. This isn’t a confidence issue or a lack of strength (well, maybe a little bit a lack of strength); it’sprimarily a lack of fundamentals. Playing competitive since age 14 all year round in Europe, he hasn’t had time to go back to basics and develop a consistent jumper with a quick release. Consequentially, he shoots like a 14 year old kid. Now that he is working out with NBA stars, Ricky will no doubt be spending a great deal of that time learning how to elevate and get better wrist action on his outside shots.

Week 10 Fantasy Surprises and Disappointments

Believe it or not, its already Week 10 of the NFL season.  Whether you're comfortably ahead or struggling to catch up with the rest of your league, it's still as important as ever to manage your roster.  So, with the exception with tonight's Raiders-Chargers game (If you haven't set your lineup with those players... you're late) I'll go through my predications of some important players you should start, sit and even add to your roster to help you win this week and the rest of the season.

Week 7 Fantasy Football Pickups

Its week 7 of the NFL season this weekend, and whether you're standing atop or looking up the standings of your fantasy league, there is still time to add players that can make (or break) your season.  Here are 5 players worth a look as we near the midpoint of the season.

1. Carson Palmer, QB, Oakland Raiders

In case you've been living under a rock the past 24 hours, the Oakland Raiders finalized a blockbuster trade with the Cincinnati Bengals that will land them (potentially) their franchise quarterback.  With Jason Campbell out of the picture for the remainder of the season, Palmer looks to be their go-to guy... especially given the high price they paid to get him.  Given the Raiders talented, and speedy, receiving corps of Jacoby Ford, Denarius Moore, and the suddenly performing Darrius Heyward-Bay, Palmer should have the tools to put together a solid season.  Especially if he returns to his 2005-2006 form, where he was one of the leagues most promising quarterbacks.  Even if he can't, with a running back like Derren McFadden to help take pressure off of the passing game, Palmer should still be a viable option at the incredibly valuable quarterback position.

What The Future Could Hold For College Football

Just a year after the Nebraska and Colorado cut ties with the Big 12, multiple other schools are starting to follow suit.  In what could be a devastating blow the Big 12 and Big East the programs, which critics say are fueled by 'money and football', may have triggered a mass exodus that will change the college athletic landscape as we know it.  While many claim this will negatively impact student-athletes as well as the rivalries that have been built up over the past couple of decades or more, there is reason to get excited.

Keep in mind, this is just one of many possible layouts of the future of college football.  But if the decision was up to me, here's exactly how it would look.

My ESPN Debut

Yesterday I saw a tweet from ESPN's new show, NFL 32, telling fans they should send in tweets, facebook messages, or youtube videos to the show.  Without hesitation I grabbed my Vikings jersey, my dog and my computer to send in a video with my question.  Amazingly, they picked my clip and aired it not only on the show, but multiple times the next day on quick promos for NFL 32!  I'm still trying to get the original show clip online (where they discuss my question in more depth), but here's part of the footage from the promo that was on today during Mike and Mike in the Morning on ESPN2.

SportsBank: Top 5 Fantasy Bargains

The NFL regular season will soon be upon us.  More importantly, this means fantasy football season is just around the corner.  Once again Sundays will become the day best friends become mortal enemies as they face off on the virtual gridiron.  Everyone knows who to take at the top -- Adrian Peterson, Chris Johnson, Arian Foster -- but it's the hidden talent, players primed for breakout seasons, that make the difference in the end.  Whether you're devising a trade, or looking for who to take in the late rounds of your upcoming draft, these are the guys that can put you on top.  So without further ado... here are my Top 5 fantasy bargains for the 2011 season.

1. Matthew Stafford, QB, Detroit
Granted, he does look
like he's 15.
Its hardly a secret that Stafford has elite talent, but his short career has been limited due to a string of injuries.  If Stafford manages to make it through the 2011 season unscathed, there is little doubt he will quickly climb the ranks of top-end fantasy quarterbacks.  With no shortage of weapons, including Calvin Johnson, Brandon Pettigrew, Jahvid Best and, more surprisingly, Nate Burleson (who has had a strong preseason) the young QB should easily rack up yards and touchdowns.  Additionally, only two teams threw the ball more than the Lions, who had played backup quarterbacks, last year.  More importantly, if you are willing to take the risk he wont be sidelined by injury this year, you may be able to pass on one of the bigger name quarterbacks, focusing on an elite WR or RB and wait to take Stafford in a later round.

With The Right Plan, The Vikings Can Return to the Playoffs in 2012

Update 2: As you already know, the Vikings have signed QB Donovan McNabb to a contract (the length of which is still undisclosed) and have come to terms with free agent WR Michael Jenkins.  Coach Leslie Frazier stated in an interview that barring unforeseen circumstances, he expects to roll with the current roster at the WR position.

Additionally, all of the Vikings draft picks, including Christian Ponder ($11M fully guaranteed), have been signed.

Update: It appears the Vikings have made a few more steps forward in the first day of free agency.  Reports are the team has traded for quarterback Donovan McNabb to be the veteran presence in the huddle, and has agreed to terms with wideout Devin Aromashodu.  Both players are expected to sign one year deals.

It finally happened.  Thats right, after a grueling 136 day lockout, the NFL and NFLPA finally have agreed to a new 10-year collective bargaining agreement.  More importantly, starting today, teams will begin the vastly expedited process of retooling their rosters to prepare for the 2011 NFL season.  The Vikings, who, after a disappointing 6-10 2010 campaign, seemed lightyears away from contention, may be just a few key moves from regaining their position as a legitimate NFC power.

It won't, however, be easy.  The NFC North has drastically improved in the past few years, and expecting to win it may be a bit too optimistic.  In addition to featuring both of last years NFC Championship game teams - the Chicago Bears and Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers - the Detroit Lions are quietly stockpiling not only a talented roster, but one that is built to compete in the NFC North for years.  Additionally, the Vikings are the only team without a sure answer at quarterback in a division that features some of the leagues young stars in Rodgers, Stafford and (sort of) Cutler.  They do, however, have a potential long-term answer at the position in Christian Ponder.  The issue is, in a quarterback driven league, Ponder may not be ready to lead a team to the playoffs at the NFL level.  Worse yet, the Vikings stand to lose a lot to free agency, with top starters on both sides of the ball entering the market.  Finally, gone are the magical days of uncapped football.  Thus the Vikings, along with the rest of the league, will need to adhere to the new salary cap of $120 million, which may require some tricky salary maneuvering.  Despite all of this, the if the Vikings make a few smart personell moves (some of which they've already done), they may still have a shot at not only returning to the playoffs, but at becoming a force in the NFC for years to come.

Heres what they need to do:

1. Franchise Tag LB Chad Greenway

This is one of the moves VP of Player Personel Rick Spielman has already made.  And despite a bit of criticism, it was the right decision.  Greenway is an essential part of the defense, and keeping him ensures they have a front 7 that consists of Greenway, Jared Allen, Kevin Williams, and EJ Henderson.  More importantly, Greenway is willing to play under the franchise label (and at $10M, he should be) which is more important than you might think.  Just last year Chargers wideout Vincent Jackson sat out much of the year due to his unwillingness to play without a long term contract.  While Greenway has already said he would happily welcome a long-term offer, this gives the Vikings the leisure of dealing with other free agent issues and forget about losing their star linebacker.  In the end, the Vikings will (and should) talk to Greenway and figure out a deal that will keep him in purple for multiple years... which should also lessen his cap hit in 2011.

How The Heat Can Win It All In 2012, And Beyond

Miami's big 3 wasn't enough in 2011, can they improve for 2012 and beyond?

Depending on your affiliation, you are likely still thrilled or devastated by the Dallas Maverick's shocking victory over the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals.  Whether you are basking in the glory of seeing Lebron James struggle on the biggest stage of his career, or still recovering from the letdown of what once seemed a guaranteed championship , know one thing... the Heat are here to stay.  Like it or not, we are looking at a team poised to contend, as they said themselves, for multiple championships.  But how can Miami improve their chances of winning it all in the upcoming seasons?  Their options may be limited, but here's where they need to start.

Ricky Rubio Agrees To Terms With Timberwolves

Rubio after being picked 5th in 2009

After two years of negotiations, Timberwolves boss David Kahn appears to have finally convinced Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio to come to the frozen tundra of Minnesota.   Details are yet to be released, but the AP confirmed that Rubio has agreed to come to the NBA after two years of playing for FC Barcelona.

Rubio joined Barcelona after being drafted by the Timberwolves 5th overall two seasons ago, when he chose to stay in europe over coming to the NBA.  He cited a nearly $6,000,000 buyout from his previous team, DKV Joventut as well as his preference to play on the east coast as reasons why.  These past two years, however, is what makes this so interesting.  Since making the jump in 2009, it appears that Rubio's stats have leveled off or even regressed.  In fact, in Euroleague play this year, Rubio only averaged 3.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 6.5 points per game.  While the argument exists that 'its a different game over there', those still arent impressive numbers.  How many elite point guards do you know that average 3.5 assists?  Yet, there still may be hope.  The guy is only 20, and if put in a good situation could show us all that he has the talent we once hoped he did.

There are a few questions as to what caliber of Timberwolves team Rubio will join next year.  Most notably, what will they do in the draft and via free agency?  What happens with Johnny Flynn now that Rubio is finally here?

That remains to be seen.  But what we will get to see is if Rubio will ever live up to his hype of 2009.

Cleveland Cavaliers Trying to Acquire the 2nd Pick, Too?

Report: Cleveland, OH - After landing the 1st and 4th overall pick in this years draft, rumors are flying that the Cavs are attempting to move up to secure the top two picks in an attempt to rebuild their franchise just a year after the departure of LeBron James.  In the potential deal, the Detroit Pistons would trade SG Rip Hamilton and the 8th overall pick to Cleveland, who can absorb his contract with the $14.7M trade exception they received after the sign and trade of LeBron James last summer.  Cleveland is then expected to buy out the remaining $25,000,000 on his contract.  The Timberwolves, then, will act as a third party and trade the 2nd overall pick to Cleveland in return for the Cavs 4th pick and the newly acquired 8th pick from Detroit.

If the trade does go through, Cleveland is expected to take Duke PG Kyrie Irving with the first pick and Arizona PF Derrick Williams with the second.  This influx of youth and athleticism will certainly create the much needed 1-2 punch that has been lacking in Cleveland for years.  The Timberwolves, supposedly, may be worried that Derrick Williams does not fit into their already PF heavy roster with Kevin Love and Michael Beasley.  By moving back to get a top-5 and top-10 pick, the Wolves may get the opportunity to add two players at other positions such as C Enes Kanter and PG Kemba Walker.

More details as they come...

Time to rebuild in Minny?

After missing the playoffs for a third straight season, the Minnesota Wild fired coach Todd Richards this past season.  While some teams may be satisfied with sell-out crowds and a team good enough to just miss the playoffs and continuously land a early-to-mid first round pick, the Wild should not be.  This is the State of Hockey... the standards are higher here.  Simply put, the Wild need to put a team on the ice that will not only put fans in the seats, but will contend for the Stanley Cup year in and year out like neighboring hockey mecca Detroit.  So the question becomes, how do they get there?  Despite a new front office, the Wild have shown an inability to improve themselves via the draft, and they continue to run a farm team in Houston that, while contenting for the Calder Cup, boasts few strong NHL prospects.  The question is, how can they turn a roster currently full of over-paid, underachieving role players into a perennial powerhouse.  The answer: blow the team up.  Thats right, the Minnesota Wild need to shake the franchise from the foundation and start anew.  It won't be easy, but here's where I think they need to start.

SportsBank's NBA Lottery Mock Draft 1.0 Picks (6-10)

In part two of our mock draft special, we pick up with the sixth pick, which belongs to the Washington Wizards.  The Wizards were one of the NBA's worst teams last season, despite a strong season from rookie point guard John Wall.  So without further ado...

6. Washington Wizards - Kawhi Leonard, SF, San Diego St.

Although this may seem like a stretch to some, Leonard fits in quite well with where Washington needs to go.  Leonard will be able to step in and instantly improve a porous Wizards defense which ranked 26th in blocks per game, and 24th in PPG allowed.  The versatile 6'7'' NCAA tournament standout is capable of guarding shooting guards, small forwards and the occasional power forward, which increases his value substantially.  Simply put, Leonard has a TON of upside, and if he continues to improve his shooting game he could help form a legit force with John Wall.

Brandon Knight #12 of the Kentucky Wildcats moves the ball while taking on the Connecticut Huskies during the National Semifinal game of the 2011 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship at Reliant Stadium on April 2, 2011 in Houston, Texas.
Also in consideration: Jan Vesley

7. Sacramento Kings - Brandon Knight, PG, Kentucky

The Kings could use a Knight at the point for a number of reasons.  Besides the obvious need for a solid on-court leader, drafting Knight would allow them to move Tyreke Evans to permanent shooting guard, where he is a much better fit.  While his name doesn't carry the same weight as, say, Kemba Walker, Knight is a legitimate point guard who can play defense and shoot consistently.  Moreover, he is a strong character guy, who, together with Evans and fellow Wildcat DeMarcus Cousins, could make Sacramento significant again.

Also in consideration: Jimmer Fredette

8. Detroit Pistons - Tristan Thompson, PF, Texas

Thompson is a phenomenal rebounder who could step in and improve the Pistons roster immediately.  While he will likely never be a star, he is a proven inside presence that will be a step in the right direction for a rebuilding Pistons team.  While they might consider international prospect Bismack Biyombo, Thompson is a safer pick that is more NBA ready.

Also in consideration: Bismack Biyombo

9. Charlotte Bobcats - Bismack Biyombo, PF, Congo

Another strong international prospect, Biyombo has tremendous upside due to his superior athleticism.  At only 18 (reportedly), he will need time to develop a complete NBA game, but the potential is there.  He will bring athleticism and rebounding to a team desperately needing both.  Since not a lot is currently known about him, his performance in upcoming team workouts will greatly determine where he goes come draft day.

Also in consideration: Marcus Morris

10. Milwaukee Bucks - Alec Burks, SG, Colorado

A quick 2-guard who can get to the basket, Burks still needs to improve his outside shooting to succeed at the next level.  While the Bucks may look to add size inside, they will likely get the most value with Burks, especially since he can play both shooting guard and small forward.  Again, Burks isn't likely to be a star, but if he continues to improve, he could become a legitimate NBA starter.

Also in consideration: Marcus Morris

SportsBank's NBA Lottery Mock Draft 1.0 Picks (1-5)

The lottery is over... and the Cleveland Cavaliers are this years big winners.  With the 1st and 4th pick in this years draft, Dan Gilbert's club, still reeling from last seasons loss of a certain superstar, stands to gain the most from this years rookie class.  Yet, despite the fact that most analysts consider the 2011 class to be relatively weak, every team will spend the next month trying to figure out who their next franchise player may be.  Numerous workouts, interviews and camps will alter predictions again and again, but as it stands today, here's how I see it going.

1. Cleveland Cavaliers - Kyrie Irving, PG, Duke
The Cav's are in desperate need of star power, and Irving might be the closest thing this draft has.  In a league driven by point guards, Irving will give Cleveland something to rebuild around.  Although some consider him a 'poor man's Chris Paul', Irving will be a solid long-term answer at the point.  Having a few seasons to learn from Baron Davis won't hurt either.

Also in consideration: Derrick Williams

Rangers Winger Derek Boogaard Found Dead in Minneapolis

Former Wild Enforcer Derek Boogaard
Update: Hennepin county medical examiner determines Derek Boogaard's cause of death was an accidental overdose on a combination of alcohol and Oxycodone

Update: Autopsy for Derek Boogaard to be completed Saturday in Minneapolis.

Update: Late night vigil, outside Minnesota's Exel Energy Center, a repatriated success.  Many family members, including Derek's brother Ryan Boogaard, teammates and friends were in attendance.  Former Wild teammates Niklas Backstrom, Brent Burns, Andrew Brunette, Stephane Veilleux and Nick Shultz were all there for the event.

Minneapolis, MN - Rangers W Derek Boogaard was found dead at the age of 28 in his Minneapolis apartment.

Boogaard, a long time fan favorite of the Minnesota Wild faithful, played 5 full seasons with the Wild before signing a more lucrative contract with the New York Rangers just prior to last season to help defend another former Wild star, Marion Gaborik.  Although Boogaard, or the Boogeyman as many of his fans called him, was hardly a prolific scorer (he actually scored his first goal since 2005-06 this season) he had immense value both as a fan favorite and as one of the leagues most feared enforcers.  Simply put, when Boogaard was on a team, opponents didn't mess with his teammates.  If they did, they paid for it.  He is widely regarded as one of the best fighters in the NHL in recent history, and at 6'7'', 265, he has a size, reach and strength advantage over just about every player.  A good coach knew that using Boogy at the right time could electrify the team and the fans.  For evidence, look no further than than the first video I will post below.  (For context, there was a scuffle and some cheap shots.  Boogaard is on the bench and the Wild fans begin to chant for Boogaard.  In the end, Coach Lemaire sends him out to skate around quick, and the stadium erupts, as Boogaard shoots a glare to the Ducks bench).

But beyond his on ice value, Derek Boogaard was a good man.  I only had the honor of meeting him twice, but both times were memorable occasions.  Each time I ran into him, regardless of where, Derek would make sure to take some time to talk to my friends and I.  He was surprisingly easy to talk to, and even joked about the upcoming game from time to time.  In no way was he your stereotypical, arrogant, hockey guy, but rather a caring, down to earth, 'kind of guy you want to just go get a beer with'.

Derek was an unbelievable person, who will remain forever in the hearts and memories for Wild fans, Ranger Fans and Hockey fans around the world.  Rest In Peace, Derek.

And as a tribute to the Boogeyman, here's a montage of Boogaard fights I found online.  Enjoy.

Minnesota's Problem? They Just Might Not Be That Good...

After winning the AL Central with an impressive 94-68 record in 2010, the Minnesota Twins are off to one of the worst starts in baseball this season. Actually, through May 5th, the Twins were tied for the worst record in the MLB with division rival Chicago at a dismal 11-18.  Although Francisco Liriano is fresh off his no-hit performance, and the team just won two important division games, it is clear the magic of Target Field is gone.  The question is... why?

Well, it may be that the Twins just aren't that good.  Just take a look at their roster.  An infield featuring Alexi Casilla and a rotation of Matt Tolbert, Trevor Plouffe and Luke Hughes is hardly characteristic of a playoff caliber team.  Moreover, the lone star of the infield, Justin Morneau, clearly isn't 100% recovered from his concussion suffered last season in Toronto.  In fact, he's off to one of the worst starts of his career, batting just .207 with 1 home run, less than one season from being an MVP candidate.  Danny Valencia - thought to be the long sought after answer at third base - has done nothing to prove he is the potential star many thought he could be.  As of Thursday, Valencia is batting just .218 with 2 home runs.

Season in Review: Anthony Tolliver's perspective

Wolves forward Anthony Tolliver
What are some memorable moments you have had this year, what does it mean to play some of your former teams?
This was my first full season in the NBA so this year will always be special to me. Playing well against my former teams (GSW, New Orleans, and San Antonio) this year definitely stick out as memories that I wont forget.
How has the team improved since the beginning of the year? the chemistry?I think that the team has learned how to adjust to one another very well on the offensive end. At times this year we played and competed against the best teams in the league.
What the biggest challenge you have faced during the season? The biggest challenge has been dealing with losing so many games. I have never lost so many games in one season in my life so that has been tough.
What have you improved the most during the 2010-11 NBA season?I think I have really become comfortable with my role as a backup power forward, coming off the bench and bringing energy to the game on the defensive end.
Who has given you the best advice during your basketball career, what advice did they give?My mother always would tell me to let my game do the talking instead of talking smack to other players.
Why do you think Kevin Love doesn’t get much “Love” from NBA fans? What fans don’t notice Kevin Love? Haha. If you understand the game you notice Kevin Love because he is a phenomenal rebounder.
When out of town, what is your favorite thing to do in an off day?I like to relax and watch movies.

If The Playoffs Started Today...

With less than a week to go in the NBA regular season, lets take a look at how the playoffs would shake out if they started today.

1. Spurs vs 8. Grizzlies

2. Lakers vs 7. Hornets

3. Mavericks vs 6. Trail Blazers

4. Thunder vs 5. Nuggets

1. Bulls vs 8. Pacers

2. Celtics vs 7. 76ers

3. Heat vs 6. Knicks

4. Magic vs 5. Hawks

In this scenario, the East has some particularly interesting match-ups.  While the Bull's will likely cruise to the second round without much resistance, the Celtics, Heat and Magic are left in much more vulnerable positions.

Dunk of the Week

It's been awhile since our last Dunk of the Week... but this should make up for it.  Blake Griffin goes soaring over Marcin Gortat for a monster jam, but gets called for the offensive foul.  (Questionable...)

More Madness: Arizona can beat Duke

Arizona's Derek Williams and the Wildcats are poised to continue their deep run in the NCAA Tourney
Arizona is back.  After missing their first NCAA tournament in 25 years last season, the Wildcats, led by sophomore Derrick Williams, are poised to continue their deep run in the 2011 tourney.  After two close wins over Memphis and a talented Texas team, the PAC-10 regular season champs are set to face off with ACC Champion Duke in the Sweet 16 on Thursday.

Duke, the defending NCAA Champions, and #1 seed in the "West" bracket (they've played their previous games in Charlotte, North Carolina), are favored by 9 in Vegas.  A perennial powerhouse, the Blue Devils' combination of superb coaching and on-court talent are as good as gets.  Lead by Kyle Singler and Nolan Smith, and with the return of freshman phenom Kyrie Irving, many have Duke penciled into the Final Four.   After closer inspection, however, it might be the Wildcats who paving their way to Houston.

Arizona's Williams is the most talented player on the court just about every night, and Thursday will be no exception.  Despite boasting the nations 6th best defense, Duke simply does not have a player who can match up with Williams.  Yes, they are physical, but that won't be enough to stop the sophomore. Williams has taken advantage of physical teams all season, and he leads the nation in free throw attempts.  Moreover, Duke's lack of depth at the forward position will only be magnified if (or when) one of them gets into foul trouble.  This is exactly what the Wildcats were able to do to a Texas team with far more talent at the forward position.   If Duke does fall in to foul trouble, they are likely to get dominated on the boards, as they rank 177th in the NCAA in defensive rebounding.  If Arizona can create second and third shot opportunities, and limit Dukes positions, they just may have a chance to reach their first Elite 8 since 2005.

It isn't just Arizona's post presence that will give them a shot at moving on, though.  Despite no true star-power, Arizona ranks 11th from behind the arc and they defend the deep ball just as well.  In fact, they shot a staggering 57% from three against the nations second best 3-point defense in Texas.  Duke, on the other hand, struggled shooting 3's against the talented, yet hardly prolific defense of Michigan.  Unfortunately for Blue Devil's fans, the Wildcats are second best in the nation at defending the three this season.  Duke lives and dies by the 3, and if they can't find a way to get open looks -- and sink them-- we may see yet another upset in this crazy NCAA tournament.

To be clear, I'm not saying Arizona WILL beat the Blue Devils... or not even that they SHOULD.  But if they go out and execute Thursday, anything can happen

MarQueis Gray on Success

There are a wide variety of teams in society; sports teams, work teams, debate teams, etc. There are many key qualities that are essential in the development of a successful team; including things like (but not limited to): teamwork, communication, sportsmanship, ethics, trust, inclusion, commitment, goals, responsibility, accountability, vision, etc.
Gophers star Marqueis Gray
Here is Marqueis Gray's response to a series of questions about success and leading a successful team.
What do you think are the 5 most important qualities in creating a successful team.
MG – Discipline, Character, Trust, Hard work, and Pride
How would you define those qualities in your own words?
MG – Discipline is being able to do things the right way, being in control of your own actions, bring respectful and responsible. Character is representing yourself in a proper manner as if you were interviewing for a job plus being a great teammate. Also being MATURE.  Trust - each guy on the field has to believe in the player next to them in order for things to go right. Off the field they have to look after and protect each other like brother’s. Hard work - a team that doesn’t work hard is not a team. Working hard is the key to building the confidence in the players and glue to holding the team together in the 4th quarter when they are tired and beat up. (both physically and mentally). Pride - is everyone with a uniform on playing together for the name on the “FRONT” of the jersey and not the “BACK”. Listening to each other, not cheating themselves, taking steps forward and not steps back.
Can you give a specific example of how you have exemplified each quality in a previous experience?
MG – These qualities are what showed up in those last two games of the season last year, and so far still remain with us in our conditioning workouts. I can say that there were more qualities but these are the ones that I feel mattered the most in “MY EYES”.

Fallout from the Chara Hit: Does the NHL Need Reform?

Pacioretty, just seconds after the collision (vancouversun.com)

On Tuesday evening, many NHL fans saw one of the most devastating collisions all season.  With just 15.8 seconds remaining in the second period, Bruins Defenseman Zdeno Chara slammed rival Canadiens winger Max Pacioretty into the boards, leaving Pacioretty motionless on the ice.  Chara was issued a 5 minute major and a game misconduct while Pacioretty was quickly rushed to the hospital.  Fortunately, Pacioretty seems to be in stable condition, diagnosed with a severe concussion and a small fracture in his fourth cervical vertebra. It is uncertain how long he will be in the hospital, although it is very likely he is out for the remainder of the 2011 season, or longer.

Chara was not suspended or fined by the league for his hit, and surprisingly, that's the right decision.  The thing is, while Chara's hit was a big one (and the two do have a history), it wasn't a violent hit.  Chara isn't a dirty player (physical, yes but not dirty).  The two players were fighting to get position on the puck when Chara got one last shove in before Pacioretty met the plexiglass.  The interference call and even the game misconduct were the correct calls, but nothing more should, or will, come of it.

The incident, however, is hardly the only one the league has seen lately.  On January 5th, a high hit to the head left one of the games biggest stars, Sidney Crosby, out indefinitely.  Last year, Florida's David Booth was hospitalized after a scary open-ice hit from Flyers center Mike Richards.  Similarly, Penguins Matt Cooke knocked Boston's Mark Savaard out.  These hits, among others, prompted the league to install "Rule 48", officially banning hits to the head.  Yet the surprising thing is, while hits to the head are down, concussions are actually up since Rule 48 was put in place.

SportsBank - Back in action

Interview with Minnesota's Duane Bennett

What was one of the main reasons you decided to come to the University of Minnesota?
DB – I love the city atmosphere, and the people up here where extremely friendly, and it just seemed like the perfect fit for me.
What is the biggest change you see in the football program from last year to this year?
At this point I have not seen much change but I’m sure there will be lots to come heading into the season this year.
DP – Who has had the biggest impact on your life, who got you going into football?
My father & my brothers. Having them behind me my whole life and supporting me was a huge reason for getting into football, although my mother is my #1 supporter.
If you could play any other sport other than football, what would you play?
DB – I would play baseball, I played it when I was younger and really enjoyed it.
What are some personal goals you have for this season?
DB – (To) reach 1,000 yards rushing and be a constant impact player for my team.
As a senior, what is one thing you will always remember about the U of M?
DB – I will always remember The Barn. The fans get crazy at our home basketball games.
What Big Ten game do you look forward to the most?
DB – I look forward to playing Wisconsin for the Axe. Last go round, would be lovely to leave with the Axe.
How excited are you about the upcoming season under new head coach, coach Kill?
DB – I very excited, he’s a great guy and knows what he wants out of his players and I love that about him.
What is your favorite thing to do on campus?
DB – I enjoy going to eat at the different restaurants, such as Buffalo Wild Wings, Tony’s Diner, and Anne’s.

Eric Lair Interview

Eric Lair will be the University of Minnesota Gophers' starting tight end for the 2011 season.  A Sophomore last season, Lair was 3rd on the team in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.

Would you consider yourself more of a blocking or receiving tight end?
EL – I am better at catching the ball right now so I would say receiving, but I’m working this spring to become a better blocker.

If you played any other position other than right end, where would you see yourself playing?
EL – Receiver or maybe a outside linebacker.

What is a normal game day routine like for you?
EL I sit alone on the bus and listen to Houston music artists to remember where I come from and what it took to get to this point. Also, all of those people cheering for me back home that I do not want to let down.

New Nathan, New Pitchers... Better than Ever?

 Twins Closer Joe Nathan
After finishing the 2010 season with the 8th best bullpen ERA in the league, the Twins knew that much of their success was due to their solid relief pitchers eating up those middle innings before John Rauch or Matt Capps came out to seal the deal.  With a lead going into the 7th or 8th inning, the Twins were confident their guys could close out the game.

This season, however, they will be looking to a lot of new names to try to mimic that success.  After losing Jessie Crain to the division rival Chicago White Sox, Matt Guerrier to the Dodgers, Brian Fuentes to the A's, and John Rauch to the Blue Jays, much of what made the Twins a good pitching team is gone.  In fact, the Twins stellar bullpen is much of what gave Minnesota the edge in the always tight AL Central.  Without them, their playoff hopes would have gone drastically down, and that inaugural season in Target Field, would have seemed far less magical.

But hope is not lost for 2011... in fact, I think they will be better.  First, Nathan's return is huge.  As with any pitcher coming off of Tommy John surgery, you don't know how he'll play until the season progresses.  But if his preseason workouts tell us anything, Nathan may be better than ever.  Nathan says he hit 88-89 repeatedly, and topped out at 91.  If this is accurate, not only is he healthy, he's weeks ahead of where he usually is during spring training.  If this pattern continues, and Nathan returns with an even stronger arm (something not unheard of with Tommy John recipients), the 2011 bullpen will already be off to a good start.  More importantly, with Nathan returning to the mound, Matt Capps suddenly becomes one of the better setup men in the league.  Add a healthy Pat Neshek, who is hoping a full offseason of rest and a new vigorous weightlifting program can help him rebound from surgery to anywhere near his 2007 level, where he pitched 70+ innings with a 2.94 ERA, and the Twins might just have one of the best late inning bullpens in the league.

Turning Down the Heat

Arguably no team has improved as much as the Miami Heat have this season.  After starting the season slowly with losses to Utah, New Orleans, Boston (twice), Memphis, Indiana and Orlando, the Heat have gone 29-8 with victories over the Lakers, Jazz, Hornets, Knicks, and Thunder.  To many, the Heat have already established themselves as a legitimate title contender.  To others, however, there resume has one glaring weakness... they can't beat the Boston Celtics.  Three times the Heat have taken on the defending Eastern Conference champs, and three times LeBron and Co. have walked away without a win.  Now the Miami Heat need to figure out how to best the original Big 3 come playoff time, or watch the NBA finals on TV.  The problem is, if Boston is healthy, I'm not sure if they can do it.

Keanon Cooper Interview

Keanon Cooper is a linebacker for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers.  Cooper will be returning in 2011 for his Junior season, hoping to help turn the program in the right direction under new coach Jerry Kill.  You can follow Keanon on Twitter here.

In high school you played safety among other positions, when did the transition to linebacker take place?
I actually only played safety spring ball of my sophomore year. I started out my junior season in the secondary, but was back to played linebacker by the start of the season. Then, was moved to defensive end by the fourth game of the season, and finished out the season there.
If you played on the offensive side of the ball, what position would you see yourself playing?
I really feel like I could play running back. I have above average speed for a running back, and I also have the size for the position. The other characteristics of a good back, such as vision, cutting, and awareness would come along with experience.
What Big 10 game do you look forward to the most every year?
I would have to go with Wisconsin. I love the buzz the game creates, and the challenge they bring with defending the Ax. It’s also one of those games that’s easy to prepared for because you know what they’re going to do, but you have to dig deep down inside to endure the pounding. It’s a game of will. Who’s going to break who’s will first?

Dunk of the Week

Blake Griffin is starting to become somewhat of a mainstay in this segment but this time he's even more ridiculous than usual.  On a breakaway against the Heat the other day Griffin brought his talents to South Beach... Enjoy.
